CTP Explained
What factors determine my CTP price?
A number of factors are used to determine the price of your CTP Green Slip. They include, location of where the vehicle is normally kept/garaged (zones are set by the Motor Accidents Authority of NSW), vehicle category (which is determined by its shape and usage), and your entitlement to an Input Tax Credit (ITC) & the period of cover required e.g. 12 mths, 6 mths etc.
Insurers may also apply other factors such as the age of the vehicle, age of driver(s) or owner(s), and any motor vehicle insurance history. If any of these factors change, then the premium may change as a result.
CTP Green Slips and GST
Why do I need to declare if I am entitled to an Input Tax Credit?
This is because the CTP premium we offer varies according to the vehicle owner/operator's entitlement to claim an Input Tax Credit. Two premiums apply to each class of vehicle. One for people who are not registered for GST (or who are unable to claim the GST component as an input tax credit) and one for GST registered tax entities who are entitled to claim an Input Tax Credit.
Why do I have a higher premium if I am entitled to an Input Tax Credit (ITC)?
As a result of GST legislation, the cost of settling a claim is higher where the owner is entitled to claim an ITC. The NSW Government has determined that there will be no cross subsidy between owners who do not have an entitlement, and those that do. As a result, the ITC entitlement premium is higher than the "no ITC" entitlement premium.
New CTP Insurance Policies and GST
To ensure that we offer the correct premium, new customers will be asked a tax status question when purchasing a CTP Insurance policy.
Green Slip Renewals and GST
Your Green Slip renewal premium offer is based on the information you gave to us in the previous year. As these details can change, it is important that you take the time to read the brochure we send to you, and your Green Slip renewal, before you pay your renewal. If any of the information is incorrect, please call us on 13 10 10.
If you are uncertain of your GST status or entitlement to claim an ITC, please discuss with your accountant, financial adviser or tax agent.
CTP Green Slip Information
How long has GIO been offering CTP insurance?
It's important to remember if you are at fault in an accident; the person injured will make a claim against your GIO CTP insurance. They may be friends or family in your car. GIO is the most experienced CTP insurer in NSW, with over 70 years experience handling CTP claims. We understand how traumatic an accident involving personal injuries can be, so we make the claims process as simple and efficient as possible.
What does CTP stand for?
CTP is short for Compulsory Third Party Personal Injury Insurance and is commonly known as a CTP Green Slip in NSW.
Who needs CTP Green Slip insurance?
CTP Green Slip Insurance is compulsory for all motor vehicles registered in NSW.
CTP insurance is not required for Trailers and Caravans (vehicles towed by a registered vehicle).
What does CTP cover?
CTP insurance covers the vehicle owner and any person who at any time drives the vehicle, against claims for liability in respect of the death or injury to other people caused by the fault of the owner or driver.
It covers the cost of all reasonable medical treatment for injuries received in the accident.
Depending on the injured person's individual circumstances, cover may also include:
- loss of wages
- the cost of care services and
- compensation for pain and suffering
From 1 April 2010 CTP insurance also provides cover up to $5,000 for an at fault driver injured in a motor accident.
CTP Green Slips DO NOT cover damage to property, including vehicles.
Does CTP cover property damage (damage to another person's vehicle or property)?
CTP insurance DOES NOT cover damage to vehicles or property.
If you need comprehensive or third party property damage insurance you will need to arrange separate cover. For more information about GIO Motor Vehicle Insurance please click here.
Does CTP cover injured drivers who are at fault?
CTP insurance provides cover up to $5,000 for an at fault driver injured in a motor accident. This cover is limited to treatment expenses and loss of earnings suffered within 6 months of the motor accident.
Cover is also available for injured at fault drivers under the Lifetime Care and Support (LTCS) Scheme. The support available under the LTCS Scheme is limited to people who have a spinal cord injury, moderate to severe brain injury, multiple amputations, severe burns or will be blind as a result of a motor vehicle accident. The LTCS Scheme does not provide a lump sum payout. For more information about LTCS refer to the questions below.
GIO Green Slip insurance also comes with extra protection for eligible at fault drivers as part of their Driver At Fault Cover. Details are listed below.
GIO Extra Driver Protection
Does GIO offer any cover for the injured driver at fault?
GIO recognises that even good drivers can make mistakes and that's why we offer Driver At Fault Cover with GIO CTP Green Slips.
GIO Driver At Fault Cover is provided at no extra cost. With this cover, at fault drivers with specific serious injuries may be eligible for up to $300,000 in benefits as a lump sum to help cover expenses such as loss of income while off work due to the injury sustained in this motor vehicle accident.
You should read the NSW Compulsory Third Party Injury Insurance Information Booklet for full details of Driver At Fault Cover.
Is Driver At Fault Cover available for everyone?
The majority of GIO CTP customers are eligible for Driver At Fault Cover, however there are some exclusions and conditions that must be met. For instance, the cover is not available to drivers under 25 years of age unless they have comprehensive insurance with GIO on the same car.
You should read the NSW Compulsory Third Party Injury Insurance Information Booklet for full details of Driver At Fault Cover.
How do I make a claim if I am injured in a motor vehicle accident?
Call us on 1800 795 277 to make a claim for any personal injury sustained in a motor vehicle accident. Depending on the circumstances, the injured person will need to submit either an Accident Notification Form or a Personal Injury Claim form. Our CTP Claims staff can help with lodgement of the appropriate form.
Is there a Product Disclosure Statement?
No. As the NSW CTP scheme operates under the Motor Accidents Compensation Act 1999 and is not subject to the same disclosure obligations as other products under the Corporations Legislation, there is no PDS for NSW CTP insurance.
How can I find out more about GIO CTP Green Slip insurance and Driver At Fault Cover?
We have a plain English information booklet that explains what you're covered for and the conditions that apply. This will be included with your CTP Green Slip. To find out more about our Information Booklet, click on this link. Alternatively, call us on 13 10 10 or drop into any GIO branch or agency.

What is the Lifetime Care and Support Scheme (LTCS)?
The Lifetime Care and Support (LTCS) scheme provides benefits to people catastrophically injured in a motor vehicle accident. The scheme is not fault based and assistance is available regardless of who caused the motor vehicle accident in which they were injured.

CTP and Registration
What is the Roads and Traffic Authority?
The RTA is the NSW State Government agency responsible for:
- Improving road safety.
- Testing and licensing drivers and registering and inspecting vehicles.
- Managing the road network to achieve consistent travel times.
- You can find out more at rta.nsw.gov.au
How does the RTA know that I have paid for my CTP Green Slip?
We will send the RTA an electronic transaction confirming that your CTP Green Slip has been paid. Your eGreen Slip is sent to the RTA immediately after you make your payment and you will be able to register your car in approximately 5 minutes time.
This service is not available for vehicles establishing a new registration, or vehicles transferring registration from interstate. You will be sent a copy of your paid Green Slip in the mail for these occasions.
What is an E-Safety check?
An E-Safety check is the electronic transfer of the Pink Slip vehicle inspection certificate to the RTA.
What is a Blue Slip?
A Blue Slip is a safety inspection report issued by the RTA to prove that a vehicle has passed the required roadworthy, design and identity standards for registration. You will need a blue slip in the following circumstances:
- Interstate transfers,
- Vehicles that have run out of registration,
- Vehicles that have been imported,
Electronic transmission of your Green Slip is not available for these instances. You will be sent a copy of your paid Green Slip in the mail for these occasions.
What is a Pink Slip?
A Pink Slip is a safety inspection report issued by an authorised inspection station (eg. garage) to prove that a vehicle has passed the required roadworthy standards for registration. Vehicles more than five (5) years old require a safety inspection as a condition of registration renewal. (See e-Safety check above).
What is e-Registration?
e-Registration is a service provided by the RTA to enable you to register your vehicle electronically over the internet or by telephone. This can only be performed when the Green Slip (eGreen Slip) and the Pink Slip (eSafety Check) have been electronically sent to the RTA.
What is Short Term Registration?
Short Term Registration (STR) is a change to the NSW registration scheme that allows the majority of vehicles to be registered for periods of less than 12 months. Previously, these vehicles were only able to register annually.
You will need a 6 month Green Slip if you wish to register your vehicle for 6 months with the RTA.
How do I get a 6 month Green Slip?
If you call GIO on 13 10 10 and ask to speak to a CTP Specialist they can explain to you the requirements for a 6 month Green Slip.
What happens when I sell my vehicle?
CTP insurance is linked to the vehicle, not the owner, so if you sell your vehicle, the CTP policy will be transferred to the new owner.
The RTA automatically notifies the CTP insurer of this change.
Similarly, if you purchase a vehicle, the CTP insurance will already be placed with a CTP insurer. Remember to contact GIO with the details of your new vehicle and we can send you a Green Slip when your registration falls due for renewal.
If you have Motor Vehicle (not CTP) Insurance with GIO and you buy a new vehicle or sell your vehicle you need to contact us to let us know.
If you buy a new vehicle, you may wish to consider GIO for your Motor Vehicle Insurance. For more information about GIO Motor Vehicle Insurance please click here.
