History

1927

GIO Australia is founded as the Government Insurance Office in 1927. It was set up by the Government Insurance Act of New South Wales to provide workers' compensation insurance under the Workers' Compensation Act of 1926 to take over activities previously carried out by the NSW Treasury Insurance Branch. 

1941

The Workers’ Compensation Act is amended to allow the selling of life insurance.

1989

The name GIO Australia is adopted to reflect the business nationwide.

1991

An association with the Home Building Society in Western Australia is formed and GIO Australia’s personal and life insurance products become available through 30 Home Building Society outlets.

1992

GIO Australia is listed on the Australian Stock Exchange following a public and institutional offer.

1999

AMP acquires a majority shareholding (57.47%) in GIO Australia Holdings Limited and GIO becomes a listed subsidiary of AMP Limited. At the time, GIO has nearly $10 billion in assets under management, a significant customer base and a growing retail market share. 

2001

Suncorp Group acquires AMP’s general insurance interests, including GIO General Limited.

2010

GIO is confirmed as a major partner with Wheelchair Sports NSW.

2012

GIO announces a major sponsorship deal with NSW Rugby Limited and becomes the inaugural platinum partner of TAD Disability Services NSW.

2013

Suncorp Group’s general insurance businesses in Australia are transferred to AAI Limited and now, AAI Limited trading as GIO, issues GIO general insurance products. 

2014

GIO announces two major deals sponsoring the Canberra Stadium, home to the Canberra Brumbies and the Canberra Raiders, and Disability Sports Australia.

2020

GIO celebrates 10 years of sponsoring Wheelchair Sports NSW.

2021

GIO Launches their new app, featuring weather alerts, the ability to make and track claims, update your policy info, and more.
