Public Liability Insurance helps cover costs you’re legally liable for related to injury and property damage sustained by third parties — that is, anyone who isn’t an employee, manager or owner — in connection with your business activities.
So if someone’s injured or their property is damaged due to a business-related activity of yours — for example, they slip and hurt themselves, or break their phone — Public Liability Insurance can also help you deal with the legal costs associated with responding to or managing claims covered by your policy.
It depends on the needs of your business and whether you operate from a fixed location or your business is mobile. For example, if your business is within a shopping centre, you may find your rental agreement specifies $20 million public liability be covered, or certain kinds of insurance be included, such as glass cover.
Both Public and Products Liability cover are included in GIO Business Insurance policies, but there are some differences to note.
- Public Liability covers your legal liability to pay compensation for third party injury or property damage that occurs while you’re on the job. However it won’t cover employee medical expenses or damage to property or goods your business owns. These are respectively covered by workers compensation and Property Insurance.
- Products Liability covers your legal liability to pay compensation for injury or damage caused by products you sell, supply, or manufacture. For example, a customer burning themselves on a faulty hairdryer you sell them.
A treatment risk is a risk relating to injuries a client sustains as a result of treatments or products you provide. Although Public Liability Insurance policies don't cover claims arising from the conduct of professional services, treatment liability can help hair and beauty professionals cover costs they are legally liable for and which are related to legal claims that result from these injuries.
When you organise your Business Protect or Mobile Business Protect policy, we’ll help you arrange extension cover for treatment liability alongside your Public Liability Insurance. This ensures you’re covered for relevant hairdressing activities or products you provide.
Both Business Protect and Mobile Business Protect include Portable & Valuable Items insurance, which covers portable equipment and tools. This includes things like:
- hairdryers and hair straighteners
- hair styling tools, and
- spray tan machines.
You have the option of selecting an unspecified sum insured (up to $2,500 per item) or a specified sum, which allows you to list individual equipment at a specified value.
Business Protect also includes Equipment Breakdown insurance, which covers the cost of repairing or replacing machinery and equipment you use at your business premises when it accidently breaks down. This includes any direct loss or damage to your business premises as a result of the breakdown. This includes things like:
- computers, point of sale [POS] equipment
- air conditioning and/or electronic equipment, and
- heating or refrigeration equipment.
