Insurance for smartphones and tablets

Coverage at home

Phones and tablets are covered by GIO Contents Insurance if they’re lost or damaged in an insured event that occurs at home.

Coverage outside the home

If you want your phone or tablet to be covered anywhere in Australia or New Zealand, not just at home, consider Portable Valuables cover, which is:

  • included with Classic Extra policies, and
  • optional with Classic policies.

We’ll pay up to $1,000 per item and you don’t need to specify it on your policy.

If your phone or tablet is worth more than $1,000 and you want it covered for its full value, you’ll need to call us up and specify it. Doing so will affect your premium.

What’s not covered

If your device is used primarily for business purposes, it won’t be covered.

Insurance for Jewellery

Coverage at home

Jewellery items have a flexible limit — that is, you can specify an item and its full replacement value on your policy.

If left unspecified, the most we’ll pay to replace jewellery depends on your level of Contents Insurance.

  • For a Classic policy, the limit is $2,000 per item or set, up to a total of $4,000.
  • For a Classic Extras policy, the limit is $3,000 per item or set, up to a total of $10,000.
  • For a Platinum policy, the limit is $10,000 per item or set, up to a total of $40,000.

Coverage outside the home

For cover anywhere in Australia or New Zealand, consider Portable Valuables cover, which is:

  • included with Classic Extra Contents Insurance policies, and
  • optional with Classic policies.

We’ll pay up to $1,000 per item and you don’t need to specify it on your policy. If your item is worth more than $1,000 and you want it covered for its full value, you can call us up and specify it. Doing so will affect your premium.

Establishing value

If you claim for a valuable piece of jewellery, we may ask for:

  • a proof of purchase
  • a valuation from a professional valuer, and
  • a photo of the item.

Jewellery items that are being exhibited, or are up for sale — for example, at an auction house — won’t be covered.

Insurance for bicycles

Coverage at home

Bicycles will be covered by GIO Contents Insurance if they’re lost or damaged in an insured event that occurs at home. Outdoor storage spaces do qualify as part of the insured address, so the bike doesn’t need to be in the house — theft from, or damage that occurs within, a shed or garage will also be covered.

Coverage outside the home

To ensure your bicycle is covered even when it’s out and about with you, consider Portable Valuables cover, which is:

  • included with Classic Extra policies, and
  • optional with Classic policies.

We’ll pay up to $1,000 per bike and you don’t need to specify it on your policy.

If your bike is worth more than $1,000 and you want it covered for its full value, you’ll need to call us up and specify it. Doing so will affect your premium.

What’s not covered

Bicycles won’t be covered if the incident for which you want to claim occurred while you were using the bike for racing or pace-making.

Insurance for laptops

Coverage at home

Laptop computers are considered part of your contents, and will be covered by GIO Contents Insurance if they’re lost or damaged in an insured event at home.

There’s no need to specify a laptop or its value on your policy to have its full repair or replacement costs covered in a successful claim, assuming that your overall sum insured is enough to cover all affected contents.

Coverage outside the home

If you want your laptop to be covered anywhere in Australia or New Zealand, not just at home, consider Portable Valuables cover, which is:

  • included with Classic Extra policies, and
  • optional with Classic policies.

We’ll pay up to $1,000 per item and you don’t need to specify it on your policy.

If your laptop is worth more than $1,000 and you want it covered for its full value, you’ll need to call us up and specify it. Doing so will affect your premium.

What’s not covered

GIO Contents Insurance doesn’t cover portable items that are primarily used for a business activity, so the information here applies to laptops dedicated to personal use.

We also won’t pay for the restoration of electronic data or files, unless they were legally purchased and you can’t restore them for free.

Insurance for drones

Coverage at home

Drones are considered part of your contents, and will be covered by GIO Contents Insurance if they’re lost or damaged in an insured event at home, as long as they weren’t in use at the time.

There’s no need to specify a drone or its value on your policy to have its full repair or replacement costs covered by a successful claim, assuming that your overall sum insured is enough to cover all affected contents.

Coverage outside the home

To ensure that a drone is covered while it’s outside the home — but not when it’s in use — you can add Portable Valuables cover, which is:

  • included with Classic Extra policies, and
  • optional with Classic policies, for an extra premium.

For Portable Valuables cover to apply to a drone, you need to specify that drone and its replacement value on your policy, which may affect your premium. It won’t be covered by default.

What’s not covered

We don’t cover drones while they’re in use. We also don’t cover your liability for injury or property damage caused by the use of a drone.

Insurance for cameras

Coverage at home

Cameras — and other photographic equipment like lenses and lighting equipment — are considered part of your contents. They will be covered by GIO Contents Insurance if they’re lost or damaged in an insured event at home.

There’s no need to specify a camera or its value on your policy, assuming that your overall sum insured is enough to cover all affected contents.

Coverage outside the home

If you want your camera to be covered anywhere in Australia or New Zealand, not just at home, consider Portable Valuables cover, which is:

  • included with Classic Extra policies, and
  • optional with Classic policies.

We’ll pay up to $1,000 per item and you don’t need to specify it on your policy.

If your camera is worth more than $1,000 and you want it covered for its full value, you’ll need to call us up and specify it. Doing so will affect your premium.

What’s not covered

We don’t cover the costs of recovering corrupted or lost files, including photos and videos. So, while we can help repair or replace your camera equipment, you should still consider proper backup procedures for your photos and videos.

We also won’t cover cameras that are used primarily for a business purpose.
