Optional Covers for Comprehensive Car Insurance

Up to 21 days hire car after an event

If your car can’t be driven, is being repaired or has been stolen, and your claim is accepted, we can arrange and pay for the reasonable costs of a similar make or model hire car for up to 21 days. This means you’ll be back on the road in no time — even if your car isn’t. When we arrange the hire car for you, we also insure the hire car against accidental loss and damage, so you’ll know you’re covered (your normal excesses apply in the event of a claim involving the hire car).

Windscreen and window glass cover (one excess-free claim per year)

Know that if your windscreen or window glass, including sun roof, is the only damage sustained, we’ll replace it or repair the damage without the excess. We provide one excess-free claim during the period of insurance. Where there is a chipped windscreen that hasn’t cracked, and can be safely repaired, we’ll also cover the cost of one repair — without you losing your one excess-free claim.

24/7 roadside assistance when you need it most

Did you know you can add GIO Roadside Assist to your Platinum or Comprehensive Car Insurance policy? With no joining fee and for less than $95 per year, we’ll help with flat tyres, flat batteries, emergency fuel, and more.

What our customers are saying

If you are eligible for more than one discount, we apply any subsequent discount to the already discounted premium (usually before adding taxes and charges). Discounts are subject to change without notice. Any discount given will be shown on your certificate of insurance.

Lifetime new car replacement

Provided you bought the car new and have been continuously insured under GIO Platinum cover from within 13 months of your car's purchase until the time of the total loss, you'll receive a replacement car of the same make and model, or similar make and model if the same isn’t available. Where that is not possible, we will pay you the amount covered or the reasonable cost of replacing your car with a similar make or model, whichever is higher.

New car after a total loss for cars less than 2 years old

If your car is a total loss after an incident and is less than 2 years old and you bought the car new from a licensed motor dealer, where possible we’ll replace it with a brand new car of the same make and model (or similar if not available). Where this is not possible, we will instead pay for the amount covered.

If your car is financed, we need consent from your financier before replacement.

*Two year new car replacement is not applicable to GIO Platinum customers who qualify for Lifetime new car replacement instead

Platinum hire car

If your car is damaged and cannot be safely driven or is in for repairs or has been stolen, you can choose to:

  • allow us to arrange and pay the reasonable cost of a hire car that is a similar make or model to your car (or if a similar make or model is not available you can choose an alternative equivalent car) using our provider (but only if our provider has a car available, and is within a reasonable distance of your location); or
  • arrange a hire car using a provider of your choice.

The most we will pay is $100 per day. The benefit stops when:

  • your car is returned undamaged;
  • we repair your car and return it to you;
  • we settle your claim

Platinum hire car

If your car has been stolen, you can choose to:

  • allow us to arrange and pay the reasonable cost of a hire car that is a similar make or model to your car (or if a similar make or model is not available you can choose an alternative equivalent car) using our provider (but only if our provider has a car available, and is within a reasonable distance of your location); or
  • arrange a hire car using a provider of your choice.

The most we will pay is $100 per day. The benefit stops when:

  • your car is returned undamaged;
  • we repair your car and return it to you;
  • we settle your claim.

Hire car

Hire car after a no fault accident (for unlimited days) where you can provide the name, address and registration details of the other driver who was at fault.

Please note: A hire car cannot be used by learner drivers or drivers under 25. Terms and conditions apply see the PDS for full details.

Hire car after theft for up to 21 days

After theft of your car, we will arrange and pay the reasonable hire cost of a car that meets your needs, using our provider (but only if our provider has a car available, and is within a reasonable distance of your location).

If there is no hire car that meets your needs available from one of our providers within a reasonable distance of your location, then we will pay you the reasonable cost you incur:

  • in hiring a car that meets your transport needs; or
  • in arranging alternative transport.

Hire car after a not-at-fault incident

After an incident covered by your policy where your car is damaged and:

  • cannot be safely driven or is in for repairs; and
  • you or the driver of your car were not at fault for the incident; and
  • you can provide us with the name and address of the person at fault and the registration number of the at fault vehicle involved;

we will arrange and pay the reasonable hire cost of a car that meets your needs, using our provider (but only if our provider has a car available, and is within a reasonable distance of your location).

If there is no hire car that is a similar make and model available from one of our providers within a reasonable distance of your location, then we will pay you the reasonable cost you incur:

  • in hiring a hire car that meets your transport needs; or
  • in arranging alternative transport.

Choice of repairer

You can choose your own repairer or allow us to arrange the repair of your car. Repairs must be approved and authorised by GIO.

Emergency repairs

Damage by uninsured drivers at fault

If a vehicle driven by an uninsured driver damages your car, and the driver of your car didn't contribute to the accident (this means that the other driver was entirely at fault), and you can provide us with the name, address and registration details of the person at fault, you'll be covered for reasonable costs of repair to your car, but no more than $5,000 for any one incident.

Cover for damage by uninsured drivers

If a vehicle driven by an uninsured driver damages your car and we agree you're not at fault, you'll be covered providing you give us the name, address and registration details of the other driver and vehicle.
