insuring your business
Your guide to hair and beauty insurance
Running your own hairdressing business or beauty salon is about helping people look good, feel great and become the best versions of themselves. Every day you make sure your clients feel confident and ready to take on the world.
Don’t you deserve to have the same confidence with your business insurance?
Whether you’re a mobile lash and nail tech wanting to insure your car, or a beauty salon owner needing hairdresser’s insurance, understanding the different types of Business Insurance is a great place to start.
Who is hair and beauty insurance for?
Today’s hair and beauty industry is flexible, benefitting small business owners and their clients because hairdressers, beauticians and make-up artists no longer need to be tied to a physical salon. But this flexibility means you need a hair and beauty business insurance policy that gives you all the cover you need – and none of the stuff you don’t. When setting up your insurance policy, GIO will work with you to select covers that best align with your needs, creating an insurance policy tailored to your kind of business.
It doesn’t matter if you work from a commercial property or travel to your clients, GIO Business Insurance is suitable for:
- hair salons and barbers,
- self-employed home and mobile hair stylists and hairdressers,
- beauticians,
- nail technicians and manicurists,
- lash technicians, and
- make-up artists.
Salon owners
As a salon owner, you’re not only responsible for the physical property, but you also need to protect your clients, employees and contractors as well. What happens if a client slips on cut hair, or has an allergic reaction to a product or treatment? Or if hot wax is accidentally spilled on a phone or other personal belongings? That’s where insurance can help. With GIO Business Insurance, you’ll be covered for things like property damage and theft, glass breakage, equipment breakdown and personal injury and illness.
For a complete list, please read the GIO Business Insurance Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
Home based businesses
If you run a hair and beauty business from your home, you should confirm how the business may affect your home and contents insurance policy. Existing GIO Home and Contents Insurance customers can check the PDS to compare with the GIO Business insurance PDS, or call 13 10 10.
Mobile businesses
Similar to the above, unless you’ve taken motor insurance under your business insurance or mobile business policy or taken out GIO Commercial Vehicle Insurance, you should confirm how using your private car for business might affect your comprehensive car insurance policy. GIO Motor Insurance customers can log into their account or call 13 10 10 to discuss.
What does hair and beauty insurance cover?
For those in the hair and beauty industry, GIO Business Insurance has two options:
- Mobile Business Protect - for self-employed hairdressers, make-up artists and mobile beauty treatment technicians who visit clients and the premises of other business owners, or
- Business Protect - for business owners working from a commercial property.
Public Liability
No matter how careful you are, accidents can happen. If a third party makes a claim against you or your business, Public Liability Insurance can provide cover if you’re found liable for personal injury to that person or their property.
Product Liability
If someone suffers an injury, or their property is damaged due to a fault in a product you’re using, you could be liable. With Product Liability, you’ll have cover for things like an allergic reaction to a product or treatment.
We understand new beauty treatments are being offered all the time, so if you’re not sure if a specific treatment you offer – or want to offer – is covered, give us a call on 13 10 10 and we’ll let you know.
Using your car for business
GIO Commercial Vehicle Insurance, also known as business vehicle insurance or business car insurance, offers three types of cover for your business vehicles:
- Comprehensive - cover for your vehicle and third party property damage.
- Legal liability, fire and theft - cover for your vehicle for fire and theft only, plus third party property damage.
- Legal liability - cover for third party property damage only.
Tax probe
In the event of a tax audit or investigation of your business’s tax affairs by the ATO or Government agency, you’re covered for the associated professional fees, such as accounting fees. This cover is provided depending on your selection of Business Audit only, Business and Directors Audit, or Individual cover.
Portable and valuable items
GIO Portable and Valuable Items Insurance covers you for the accidental loss or damage to items you usually carry with you in the course of your business, like mobile phones, laptops and your equipment bag.
GIO can help with a range of flexible insurance options designed to suit different types of hair and beauty businesses. Get a quote online or call us on 13 10 10 (check our contact hours) to find out more.
